Instagram — like its parent/overlord, Facebook – doesn’t like you. But the wider world likes it… a lot… so we gotta continue paying attention. As such, here’s some Insta-news via TechCrunch.
Instagram is apparently “swaying the balance toward simplicity but away from originality” by adding the ability to publish feed posts to different accounts you control at the same time. So, say you have two accounts on Insta: @SuperYou and @DuperYou. You can now “self regram” something you posted via @SuperYou from your @DuperYou account by toggling from one account to the relevant other.
An Instagram spokesperson confirmed to TechCrunch that this option is becoming available to all iOS users, stating to the site: “We are rolling out this feature to provide a better experience for people who often post to multiple accounts.”

According to TechCrunch, the self regram could make it easier for businesses, influencers and regular old normies with Instas, Rinstas and/or Finstas to publish the same meme, promotional image or other content across their profiles (relatively) simultaneously. This could be a legit time and energy saver, but it could also make Instagram’s feed a bit more cookie-cutter and repetitive to viewers. This would presumably be more of an issue if one had simultaneous followers on their different “version” accounts – but isn’t not doing that the whole purpose of having multiple curations/accounts?
TechCrunch says that simplifying publishing “sounds obviously better,” but it could also dilute the quality of Instagram. Good thing a feed’s algorithm can just demote generic content that doesn’t resonate with people. You’ll still run the risk of content becoming stale if you’re posting and reposting the same stuff though.
As with everything related to sex-negative social media, this presents a bit of a conundrum. For instance, how much effort do you put into Insta knowing that at any moment they can randomly mess with your profile — and likely will as soon as they connect you to the sex industry? Is a Rinsta/Finsta balance even necessary? Or, as an industry, do we just call that your work account versus an account under your “real” name? And even then, is it worth having a “real” account knowing how likely it is that those accounts will inevitably cross paths on someone’s “suggested” feed?
Social media – it’s an endless puzzle that we always need to be thinking about!
