Catherine Tayler is a Canadian model who’s been online, exclusive to Streamate, since 2010. As such, she’s got a lot of insight about working on cam — and a super kind willingness to share.
We received the following question from a person who was still thinking about starting a webcam career:
Do you think that it’s best to create a bit of a following first on a site like Snapchat Premium, MyGirlFund, FetLife, or ebanned before starting on a cam site?
What cam sites do you think are the best for payouts and what you can/cannot do on cam? I want to be able to have couples with me (guys and girls) and to smoke weed. (I know that some cam sites don’t allow that shit.) I want to get the most payout for my shows — like 50 percent or even 80 percent if that’s possible.
Catherine weighted in with insights stemming from her own nuanced experience online and within multiple platforms.
Let’s read what she had to say:
So I’m gonna try to answer all this, with my point of view.
First cam and Snapchat are two different things and unrelated. There’s a lot of girls who are doing only Snapchat and/or clips and do very well and vice versa — some who do only cam and don’t do any Snapchat or anything else and only focus on cam.
The three other sites mentioned are fairly small sites. FetLife is a social network that can’t be compared with any mainstream social network really. To me, it’s better to find a way to be on Facebook, Instagram or any big mainstream social network than be on an adult-only social network. People check their Facebook every single day — over two billion of them. I’m not sure people get up in the morning to check their FetLife, but it works for some. That’s just my opinion. MyGirlFund is like ManyVids or OnlyFans. If it works for you, it’s great. Sometimes it’s better to be at the top of a smaller site than at the bottom of a big one.
If you have time, I’d say be on every site you can be, as long as your content is different from one site to another. Test. See what content sells better here and there, and see what works for you. If you don’t have the time to do all that, engage with people, produce specific content, etc.
I’d say stick to the big players like ManyVids and iWantClips. One thing thoughL None of those sites will send you traffic really. It’s up to you to get a following. People tend to go find a girl they already know rather than browsing around randomly.
The best way to get a following for Snapchat, for example, is to create unique, fun content on the platform every single day. Try to do takeovers from websites or accounts that are asking to get some followers. If your content is interesting, whatever that means for them, then you will gain following. Then you can worry about how to sell a premium version of it. For that, FanCentro is probably the best option. It lets you manage your members, see when they expire, etc.
Now for cams…
The payout is totally irrelevant criteria. Some sites payout that much BUT they are probably small sites. The important thing is not what percent you make, it’s how much you make. I always say “Do you want 80% of $100, or 30% of $1000?”
I work on a site that pays out 35 percent, yet I make a lot more than previous sites where I could get up to 100 percent! It’s all about traffic, paying traffic, etc. If you are about what’s the highest percent you can get, well, I’m not even sure what site offers 80 percent honestly.
MyFreeCams offers 50 percent, Chaturbate about the same I think. Those are freemium sites so everybody can watch for free and some will pay. It’s a different business model than premium sites where users pay for your shows with their credit card and $1 = $1 versus a token system.
As far as you can or cannot do on cam, that’s all about the law.
On most sites, you won’t be able to smoke weed, simply because in most countries in the world it’s illegal. In some states it’s illegal, and overall it’s still not ok at the federal level — even though you might live in a recreational state like I do. It’s true that I’ve seen girls smoking on cam anyway though. Sites don’t have people monitoring 24/7, so you can get away with it — or not. The “trick” would be to have a vape pen. Nobody can know what it is, so it’s usually fine. What I do is I smoke on cam — but off camera — and that works.
As far as bringing people on cam, most sites are okay with it besides MFC that doesn’t allow guys. Any other sites, you can have whoever you want as long as they are registered on your account. Sites will want to check their identity and be 2257 compliant, but that’s pretty much it.
Let me know if you have any more questions.
