We’ve approached the art of talking dirty – and how it can increase your earning potential and develop your brand performance – previously on YNOT Cam.
Katy Seymour, for instance, wrote a brilliant article in which she outlined how overcoming nervousness and shyness is one of the major hurdles you tackle when you dirty talk. Indeed, talking dirty — whether in your personal life with a lover or as part of your on-cam persona –- is something that is a lot trickier than it seems.
One reason as to why? It’s an act that lays bare both your own and the recipient’s vulnerabilities. Talking dirty exposes the intimacy of sex and your own desires. It can leave even the most confident-seeming person feeling a little bit off-kilter. So, if you’re considering adding it as an aspect to your shows yet you’re not entirely sure how to get over any nerves you might have, one thing you could try to get into the spirit of sexy talk is erotic fiction.
Reading it
There are a few ways of using the written word as a tool to help hone your dirty talking craft. The simplest one to start off with? Go to your local book shop or get online, and get yourself some erotica to read.
The best place to start with erotic fiction is with short story anthologies, which give you a variety of writing styles to dip in and out of. Consider the scenarios these stories present, and let yourself be inspired by the flow of the prose and creativity of the interpretations on the theme of the book.
Reading it out loud
Once you’ve eased yourself in by reading some sexy fiction, try reading it out loud.
Pick a section from a story, and find a quiet spot or a quiet moment in your day. Reading it out loud, to yourself, helps you get comfortable with those very words that can cause you nervousness in the first place. Sure, it may seem a bit cringe at first – take it from someone who writes erotic fiction and actually does this to practice for readings – but bite through that initial wave of unease and keep going. After a while, you’ll find it much easier to not just say those words out loud but to also start thinking about ways to use them as part of your performance.
Listening to it
Whether for your ears only via an audio book or sitting in the audience at an erotica reading, there is a lot to be learned from listening to someone else read a sexy tale out loud. Take note of the cadence and inflections of the reader’s voice and how they play with rhythm and the words they’re reading. You can decide for yourself if you found something to take away and adapt to your performance – or, if you’d rather do the polar opposite of what you’ve just seen or heard.
Knowing how you don’t want to go about a situation helps inform you as to how you do want to approach something.
Try writing some erotica yourself
Give yourself permission to just write for the sake of writing it. Don’t worry if you don’t fancy yourself a writer. This is just for practice, like a warm up exercise (or, it may reveal a hidden interest or skill).
Writing can be a good way of testing words and seeing how they may fit into your performance. Think about what you’re already doing on cam – What’s your style, what are you known for already? Then, let your imagination run wild and spin a scenario. Think of it as a test run for…
Letting yourself be led into your viewer’s fantasy
In the end, you’re not practicing a script to read out – you’re using erotic fiction as a tool to let yourself get more comfortable with talking dirty with your audience. It’s acting as your confidence builder, adding to your own imagination and helping you play around with those kinds of words in your own creative way that’s unique to you.
Once a viewer takes you by the (metaphorical) hand and leads you into their fantasy – whatever that may be – you’ll find yourself on a lot more steady ground to follow them. That’s when the fun really starts.
