Give a woman the right lipstick and she can conquer the world. — Anonymous
A new year only recently began — and of course, traditionally, this is the time where people vow to try something new or shake up their routines. But if you’re a bit like me and you’re really not into the whole Major Life Overhaul, maybe something small could be a good start?
Every model has their own approach to getting their game face on for a long day on cam. If yours involves make-up, it’s very likely that you have at least one favourite camera-ready lipstick in your arsenal, be it a trusty nude or a bright red. Conversely, if you’re looking to take your first steps into using make-up in your camera look, getting yourself a good lipstick can be a solid building block for that look.
Given all that, why not take the opportunity to get experimenting in this new year? Whether you’re completely a newbie to painting your pout or a dab hand with the lippie, there’s a good chance you might find something that tickles your fancy in this round-up of camera-ready lipsticks.
Some quick tips before we delve in:
-
- When picking a shade, keep in mind your camera and your lighting – lights can be quite harsh and could potentially wash you out. Don’t be afraid of picking a stronger shade than you might for daily life.
- Take the length of your day into consideration. If, for example, your lips tend to dry out when you’re talking a lot, choose a type of lipstick that will keep your pout nicely hydrated throughout. Similarly, think about durability – will your chosen paint be in it for the long haul, or will frequent reapplication throughout the day be needed?
- Consider also investing in a lip primer. A good lip primer ensures long-lasting color and the smooth application of your lipstick. It can also prevent your color “bleeding” – basically, it helps you stay within the lines.
- Don’t forget to take care of your lips when you’re off camera – remove any make-up you’re wearing, give your lips a going-over with something like one of Lush’s lip scrubs (personal favorite: Bubblegum) and get out some balm to soothe and rehydrate.
At the end of the day, your style is your style. It’s all about your unique personality on camera and how you bring it to life. Choose something that feels right for you. If you’re not particularly drawn to any of the lippies listed here, that’s no problem – let this list be a guide in your paint experiments!
A dark and mysterious semi-matte – Sugarpill lipstick in Anti-Socialite
Cruelty-free cult brand Sugarpill (which is very popular with the queens of RuPaul’s Drag Race) was born from the demand for bright and unique make-up and boasts vivid colors and pigmentation throughout all its products.
Anti-Socialite (seen middle top row below) is a semi-matte blackened burgundy — the perfect choice for the cammer wanting to project femme fatale realness. Customers boast about its durability, it’s vegan and it fits a variety of skin tones.
The universal red – Stunna Lip Paint by Fenty Beauty
Quite possibly the most talked about brand of 2017 – Rihanna’s Fenty Beauty had people queuing up in stores for hours and product flying off the shelves. If you’re in the mood for a classic red shade that goes with any skin tone, Stunna could be the new beauty love of your life.
Sheer wonder – MAC Lustre Lipstick
For cammers on the look-out for something a bit more subtle, yet still shiny (who doesn’t love a bit of shiny), trust on good ol’ MAC to deliver with their Lustre Lipsticks.
A gorgeous line of sheer lipsticks, perfect for just a hint of color and a good bit of moisture. Be warned: you may want to put on a few coats to get full coverage. Also, you will want to swatch to see what best fits your skin tone and your look.
Glossed up – Clear Lip Gloss by Glossier
If you’re looking to keep it clear as day, get thee to Glossier. No glitter. No sticky, glue-y feeling whenever you press your lips together. No grit, all gloss. A great way into lip paint, without the commitment to a color and with plenty of hydration as it contains Vitamin E.
Ooh, shiny – The Grape Life Metallic Lip Whip by Beauty Bakerie
Yep, metallic purple, the lip color of your futuristic space princess dreams. For cammers on the hunt for something a little wilder, try a metallic lip cream, like the lip whips from Beauty Bakerie (and, just a warning – you may get a bit hungry browsing their web store…).
