Who doesn’t love glitter?
Glitter was a staple makeup item in the Caboodle of my younger days—also known as a hyped-up makeup bag through the late ‘90s and into the ‘00s. And although I’ve never stopped wearing glitter—I regularly sneak it into my eye makeup and hair routines—2018’s glitter trends are like nothing I’ve seen before in mainstream makeup.
The following “adult” glitter trends are definitely worth trying out in the new year.
1. Liquid lipstick with a glittery touch
A sparkling lip is one of the hardest looks to pull off. Although a heavy-glitter lip look make appear beautiful right after you apply it, the lipstick can quickly turn into a melted fairytale after breakfast. Thankfully, the LiquiLUST 007 kits by Pat McGrath contain lip colors, a gloss and a glitter lip solution that make adding subtle amounts of glitter a breeze.
The Colour Bliz set, for instance, features hot pink, true red and dark purple colors that can be paired with a clear vinyl gloss or a shimmery violet solution. Find it at Sephora for $75.
2. Glow with a golden touch
Refinery29 rightfully notes that Rhianna was the person who put this subtle yet bold highlighter look on the map. You, too, can easily achieve this look that will inevitably turn heads with more than a few brands.
There’s Rhianna’s very own Fenty Beauty Killawatt Highlighter ($34). It’s “a powder formula in a pigmented, yellow-gold hue,” Refinery29 described. “Dust it all over cheekbones, use it as eyeshadow, or spot strobe.”
If you’re on budget or just aren’t ready to commit to a higher price point yet, opt for Wet n Wild’s MegaGlo Highlighting Powder. It comes in a pale gold, a silvery white and other luminous shades. It’s priced at $4.99.
3. Glittery “upside-down” liner
Thank goddess for this trend. First, it looks amazing. Second, it’s perfect for people who suck at putting on traditional eyeliner—ahem, me. Basically, all you need to do to achieve this look is wear a bold, glittery color—an eye shadow or liner—on your lower lid. That’s it.
If you want to try this look, give NYX’s Holographic Halo Cream Eyeliner a try. It’s $11 and boasts a unique formula with ultra-fine pigmented pearls. Here are several other bold looks as well:
4. Create a glittery inner (eye) circle
To create this look, simply pick a glittery shade of eye shadow of your choice, and highlight the inner corners of your eyes. You could pick a darker color of shadow, but this look tends to appear best with lighter shades.
Although any glittery eye shadow could work here, we’d like to highlight Urban Decay’s Cosmic eyeshadow ($21). It’s light and iridescent.
5. All-over extreme glitter
If you love glitter—like really, really, REALLY love glitter—you need to embrace the all-in, unadulterated glitter look.
All one needs to do to get this look is invest in a glitter that’s heavy. Thankfully, Lemonhead Los Angeles makes Spacejam, a line of super fun, heavy, various colored glitter.
We’re highlighting Birthday Bitch Spacejam because of its “combination of confetti, opal and stars blended into a base hue of Barbie Corvette pink and prismatic silver.” Priced at $32.
