Halloween is almost here.
In fact, because of how the dates fall this year, spooky people across the land are referring to this Saturday and Sunday as Halloween Weekend. It’s basically your last chance to pre-party before the actual holiday, so you might as well go all out and get creative.
You’ve seen the black cat costume and are so over watching dozens of witches partying down on Halloween night. Where does one get fresh costume ideas these days, anyway?
The internet, of course!
We found the following five unique halloween costumes on Pinterest (and another rendition of each via Insta). Each idea is super-fun, creative and seasonal.
The first time we saw Saw, well, let’s just say Billy the Puppet was terrifying. It’s believed that, before becoming the Jigsaw Killer, John Kramer created Billy as a gift — and fans of the franchise know how that worked out.
Teleport to real life and the Saw doll presents a wealth of options for creative costuming. Your version of Billy the Puppet can be gnarly or nice, scary or sexy — or maybe a little bit of both.
Key elements of the Saw doll costume include Billy’s black shorts and jacket and the red spirals on each cheek. This woman put great care into her Billy makeup, and the outfit portion of her costume could easily go scary or sexy.
Group costumes are really hard to pull off. They are either done to death or pretty boring.
So, when we spied this incredibly creative and totally simple four seasons costume, we had to include it. The way the women simply embellish clothing they already have to highlight each season — spring, summer, autumn, winter — is fun and, honestly, quite beautiful.
Here’s another fun example.
No one can deny the power social media wields. People are on any number of apps throughout the day, every day of the week. And although Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest are still quite popular, few apps have had the visual — and viral — power of Snapchat. So, it was just a matter of time before talented makeup artists and costume wizards perfected a way to interpret the popular app.
This woman perfectly captured the oh-so-classic unicorn filter that made Snapchat viral. We love how she’s perfectly blended the unicorn … um … vomit from her mouth to her sweater. Also: Her eye makeup perfectly mimics the wide-eyed look for which the filter is famous.
Here’s another fun group version: All the filters.
Ordinarily, we are sick to death of lady versions of costumes. Lady Micheal Jackson, Lady Wile E. Coyote… Enough! To add insult to injury, “lady” is usually code for sexy or sexualized — see classics like Sexy Donald Trump and Sexy Pizza (which I guess technically is gender-neutral). So when we suggest Lady Beetlejuice, know we’re aware of the bigger issues.
Beetlejuice is his own special category of character, though. Far from scary or sexy, he’s more gross and annoying than anything else. As such, this costume comes with a fair share of subtle gender commentary (wink, wink).
Beetlejuice’s signature black-and-white striped suit has two added benefits that collectively put this idea square into our winner’s circle: warmth and high style potential. Skip Sexy Clown Fish and opt for a stripped suit — or a stripped jacket and tights like the woman linked above.
Go all out with your Lady Beetlejuice makeup though, like the woman below. This is where you can really make an annoying, gross dude-bro costume over into something great.
Although this costume isn’t for hoomans, it’s still quite cleaver and unique, so we had to include it here.
Anyone who has a dog knows the pain and humor of the “cone of shame.” So, we love that this owner took an old cone, made it into a costume and Snapchat-ed the results. The pup-parent simply added a stick with some felt/Styrofoam olives to make a pup martini. Sure, the dog is not amused. But we sure are.
Cone of shame? Bella the dog is wearing a cone of fame.
