I get served all kinds of (mostly useless and seemingly highly off-mark) ads via various social media platforms every day. But today I was presented with this: “The Allure Selfie Case by Case-Mate.”
According to the manufacturer:
Putting your best face forward for a great selfie is an art form: You need the right lighting, an appealing background, the perfectly angled head tilt (duck-facing is so 2016). Lucky for us that Allure and Case-Mate have created the Allure Selfie Case to make taking all of those selfies a cinch. With a 360-degree rotating ring for stability and a soft, white light, the Allure Selfie Case is available for the iPhone 7, 6, and 6s and iPhone 7 Plus, 6 Plus, and 6s Plus and comes in rose gold (our current fave color and hair trend of the moment).
The phone case has its own lighting, as in dimmable, professional-grade LED lighting beaming out of it to enhance your photos (How is this light powered/charged?), and you slip your finger through a ring affixed to the back when you’re holding your phone. This allows you to rotate and angle your device in the palm of your hand with ease, like some sort of selfie-weaponized Gambit.
When I first saw this phone case, my immediate thought was Ehhh, do we need this? But on further reflection, I’m now of the mind, “How in the heck do we NOT need this?”
A light-up selfie-case with a special stability ring splits the difference between the awkwardness of handheld palm positioning — something even seasoned pros lament — and the other extreme of trying too hard, too obviously. (I’m thinking selfie stick here. It’s too much.)
This promo item from Allure isn’t the only selfie-specialized case on the market. LuMee makes some super-snazzy ones that range from $39.95 to $69.95, and apparently these things charge as your phone is charging. The LuMee doesn’t come with the rotating ring, though. Quick perusal of the interwebs seems to indicate Case-Mate’s Allure promo Selfie Case is the only one with that special feature. Even the Kardashains don’t have it. Yet.
So do you need this? I’d honestly say this work-related expense seems like a must-have — even at $70 a pop from Case-Mate directly.
(You also get a magazine subscription and an Allure Beauty Box when you buy a selfie case, which, I mean, those are fun.)
Check out Lovette’s review of the LuMee below. (Allure wins IMO, though, because of the 360 ring).
