I recently covered the up-and-coming Twitter-like platform called Threads. At the time of writing, Internet rumors hypothesized how the new challenger would be different/the same as Twitter and how competitive it would be. In mid-May, heavyweight news outlet, Bloomberg vaguely reported Threads would be launching “sometime this summer” giving us a possible timeframe for when all our questions would be answered about the newcomer.
Well, “sometime this summer” came pretty fast.
On July 6, a mere two months after the Bloomberg post, the secret of Threads was out. An astounding success, its launch garnered 30 million users in less than 24 hours putting a thorn in the blue bird’s side – not to mention other competitors’ like Bluesky, Mastodon, and Post.
Twitter immediately jumped to attention, throwing threats Meta’s way in hopes to stop the exodus to the copycat site.
As discussed by CNBC, Musk’s attorney, Alex Spiro sent a letter to Meta accusing them of “willful misappropriation of trade secrets” and warning them that they better not poach followers or they could expect a big fat lawsuit. Spiro whined that Meta had “hired dozens of former Twitter employees” who were probably spilling the beans on how Twitter works, giving Threads an unfair advantage.
Oh, wah wah… Karma’s a bitch!
After the way Twitter employees were treated by Musk who fired more than half the staff as soon as he took over (with a slew more quitting due to his dictator style ultimatums) they’ve set up a perfect breeding ground for revenge, so it serves them right. I suspect even if former Twitter employees aren’t divulging trade secrets to Threads, they’re working their little hearts out to stick it to their old boss.
So, what does all this mean for cammers?
It means Threads has Twitter on the run.
Chances are Threads is going to be a major player so it’s wise to get in on the ground floor by joining if you haven’t already. To get your account set up, download the app here. Threads works through Instagram, so if you don’t have an Instagram account, you’ll need to open that as well. You can also get your Threads account blue check verified as well if this is of interest.
For those of you in Europe, you’ll have to wait. Currently Meta is having a little hiccup due to “regulatory uncertainty” as explained in this article by Indian Express. I’m betting though, that it won’t be long until they get the approval needed by the EU to launch, so get ready.
