Nothing looks more beautiful than a healthy head of hair on camera, but it’s not always the easiest to achieve when you’re constantly dying, highlighting, blow-drying, curling, straightening, braiding, or whatever else you’re plaguing your tresses with.
Take the damage up a notch if you’ve got grey in your hair as you’ll be sitting in the salon a lot. I do think a full head of silver is quite beautiful, it’s just the in-between that can age you. Sure, some can pull it off, but most of us can’t so that means religious dying every 6-8 weeks.
The point is all of this constant stress on your hair can really mess it up.
Sure, your awesome light setup in your cam room may hide the damaged ends, but you know the truth. If you’re brushing your hair and it’s breaking off in your hand and your frizz and split ends are out of control, your coif is begging for help.
So, what’s a girl or guy to do?
In a perfect world, we’d never use any harsh chemicals or heating tools… but who are we kidding? That’s never gonna happen! The key is to mitigate the damage by using the right products, techniques, and not cutting corners.
One of the first tips to keeping it looking healthy is to suck it up and pay for a professional dye or highlighting job instead of doing it yourself.
Sure, we’ve all had to cut corners when money is tight, but whenever possible get your hair done by an expert. It makes a huge difference on not only the damage that is done to your strands but how it looks. First off, your hairdresser is going to have access to better products than you can find on the shelf – especially if you go to an Aveda Concept Salon – which I’ve had lots of luck with – their dyes have not damaged my hair.
Second your stylist will apply it correctly – it’ll be even all over your head, the color will come out when it’s supposed to (not ten minutes early or late, which makes a difference) and they’ll help you choose a hue that will look best on you. You may think you know but most people don’t – we’ve all seen someone who is positive red hair looks great on them, but it’s awful with their skin tone. Further, most of us can tell a home dye job whereas a professional one – if done well – will look like it grows right out of your head, or just super hip (if you go with outrageous colored highlights for example).
Another tip is to take your time with combing your hair and use the right products to help with tangles.
As talked about in this article by Reader’s Digest, start at the tips not the roots and be gentle when combing. Always use a detangler and when using heating elements, use an additional product to protect your strands. There’s a ton of good ones out there but I like PURA D’OR Argan Oil Heat Shield – it doubles for both issues. Lastly if you’ve got curls or naturally dry hair already you’ll want to find something to help – I’ve found Luseta Macadamia Oil, and ZirYabsBodyBrew’s Andalusian Hair Serum to work.
Be kind to your coif and it will keep you looking great on cam for years to come!
