Since the beginning of time, sex and spirituality have been placed on the complete opposite ends of the scale.
Most religions seem to consider sex a distraction, if not a sin that will send you to hell, unless it takes place in a heterosexual marriage. So, if sex is a sin, therefore sex work is categorized as a sin, too. By this logic, no religious or spiritual sex worker would exist, right? Well, not quite. While not all religious or spiritual sex workers follow organized religion, they certainly exist. I spoke to Victoria Lotus and Minnie St. Claire to learn about the place of spirituality and religion in their lives.
Victoria Lotus started online sex work in March 2017 with very little sexual experience outside a monogamous marriage.
“My beliefs are God centered. I believe in one God and the power of the Holy Spirit through intuition and the soul. I do not follow an organized religion, but have in the past,” Lotus shares.
“I felt marginalized from the rest of society and the congregation while working in this field, so I left to find my own true path and work through the years of guilt and self-hatred that organized religion unfortunately leaves behind,” says Lotus.
Lotus tells me that she has always been spiritual, except for one semester in college during the Iraq war when she identified as an atheist.
“One way or another, I feel incomplete without the knowledge of a larger force working behind the scenes. There are many things I do not understand, and science cannot explain. Belief in God helps me come to terms with that fact,” Lotus explains.
Her beliefs help her to seek a deeper connection with nature, understand people and make sense of the world around her.
“Spirituality is implemented in every portion of my life, from how I spend my free time hiking and camping in the woods to how I decorate my home with plants and calming water, to what I choose to wear or listen to help release and process negative energy,” shares Lotus.

Lotus sees consensual sex work as something very spiritually powerful.
“A lot of what I do on a daily basis is spiritual through sexual healing, whether it be from helping someone process pain and trauma to finding comfort in acceptance for who they are on the inside in a world they may feel marginalized or ridiculed in just the same. It all involves an exchange of energy and love, connection and intimacy for me,” says Lotus.
“For someone to discredit those experiences, it is certainly their freedom to do so, as with any other belief system or occupation out there. I take the opinion that it comes more from a place of ignorance rather than malice. Some people are very stubborn with a fixed mindset. I do not go out of my way to change or convince anyone. I love and live my life according to my own rules and a way of life that works for me,” shares Lotus.
To her, sexuality is an integral part of the human experience and allows people to grow and evolve.
“To deny one’s own humanness is to deny God. I truly believe we were put on this planet to love and love within all our capacities: mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually. To say they do not mix would be superficial at best, since they are linked. People have to awaken and open their minds to realize those connections,” Lotus explains.
Minnie St. Claire has been working in the adult industry for over 20 years.
“I was raised Christian; my mother grew up around the denomination of Seventh Day Adventist. When I became an adult, I became curious of the Buddhist faithm and I was briefly involved with the Soka Gakkai International. Over time, I’ve developed a strong metaphysical and Wiccan philosophy, that has elements of Greek mythology and non-denominational Christian,” says St. Claire.
“I’ve always had a strong faith and belief in the universal cosmetic unexplained energy without being committed to an organized religion. I grew up being told to try new foods and learn the faith of others’,” St. Claire stated.

St. Claire says that people who think religion and sex work doesn’t mix, are looking through the puritan Christian lens founded by an organization that was created to strip away people’s creative freedom where they judge and punish people for their thoughts and actions.
“When I look at my African heritage, many of our spiritual beliefs and rituals were stripped away and destroyed from European white Christians whose mission was to extinguish our humanity and spiritual essence. For someone to wake up and continue on their daily activities, that takes a spiritual practice, even if it is not identified as one,” tells St. Claire.
Talking to these fellow sex workers was only further proof to me that incorporating spirituality or religion in one’s life as a sex worker is truly possible. It might take time and some adjustments, but it is doable. Are you a religious or spiritual sex worker? I’d love to hear more about you in the comments below!
