Although Instagram began as a personal photo blog, there have been many changes to the app and in the social media sphere in general. Additional players have entered the arena and used past learnings to build innovative platforms which have been hugely successful, and the way people use the Internet has also begun to evolve, becoming more interconnected with social media than ever before.
Therefore, even though cam models have struggled to keep their platforms following the changes brought about by FOSTA/SESTA, social media is still a vital tool for promotion.
Keeping all this in mind, let me introduce you to Amanda Kohal and the Insta-Site!
Amanda Kohal is a social media marketing expert, sharing mainstream marketing advice on TikTok and Instagram. She developed the concept of the “Insta-Site” which harnesses the way that Instagram is currently working and how their users engage with the platform.
What is it?
The “Insta-Site” strategy treats your account on Instagram as a mini version of a website.
The key to the “Insta-Site” is that you have a maximum of 15 posts on your profile grid, all of which are reels.
Instagram currently prioritizes reels, so these are very powerful to use on your profile. Instead of posting to your profile 3-4 times a day (as was recommended in the past), the “Insta-Site” concept developed by Amanda means you add new content to your profile several times a week and these reels are less about sharing what you are doing day-to-day but about showcasing your brand. The reels on your profile are set up more like what you would have on a website, focusing on showing new visitors who you are. This strategy aligns with the way Instagram is now moving people around on the site.
Reels can be removed from your “profile grid” but that doesn’t mean they are archived; they just go into your set of reels. Amanda recommends updating your 15 posts semi-regularly, but not to treat the site as a content creation platform any longer.
Why An Insta-Site?
Social media platforms have started to build connections between each other, so that content shown on one can also be easily shared on another (think Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter – simply toggling a ‘share to’ button on one can post to the other two). Most sites are also now using Search Engine Optimization (SEO) as a fundamental base for helping people find who or what they are looking for. SEO is the power of the internet, and how you’re able to find what you need, is relevant, and is trustworthy.
The reality is that while having your own website is extremely important for building and maintaining your brand, social media is becoming the first place where you connect with your customers. This is because of the amount of time people are spending on them; why change to a different app (e.g., Google) when you can just search within Instagram?
By simply changing my approach to my Instagram and turning it into an “Insta-Site,” I tripled the amount of profile visits to my page, and a majority of these visits were new people.
I am still massaging it into what will work best, but it is a huge shift for me in these initial stages.
What About Stories and Highlights?
Your “stories” remain extremely important on Instagram because they are the place where your current followers will engage with you.
Continue updating your stories daily and include sharing all your day-to-day stuff, which may have ended up on your profile grid. Like Amanda says, stories are where you build the connections with people who have decided to follow you, so keep this in mind as you add to it.
Your highlights also remain super important; think of your highlights as your “Insta-Site” menu bar. What would be in the menu bar of your website? About Me, Content, How To Contact Me, and Sites are just a few off the top of my head, but Amanda goes into detail about how to build these to work for you. Although Amanda is a mainstream social media marketing expert, everything she shares can be adapted for any brand, just by thinking outside the box.
I suggest following Amanda to get more details on how to supercharge your Instagram.
Speaking to her about this article, she said she’s excited that the “Insta-Site” strategy is spreading and is keen to connect with more creators. She provides a huge amount of material to assist people in building their social media presence and goes into more detail about what I have shared here.
