This series (the first of three) is going to help you uplevel your life in 2023.
I purposely waited a bit to present this article because typically people make a ton of New Year’s resolutions during the last two weeks of December while they are still stressed out and over-extended. Let’s face it, who is really in the right place emotionally during that time of year to make big life decisions?
Over the next three articles I am going to share a way for you to actually reach your desired outcomes.
One of the reasons people rarely accomplish their New Year’s resolutions is because they make a list that can be overwhelming at best and impossible to finish at worst. Most people are defeated before they even start. The method I’m going to share with you will help you achieve multiple goals without overwhelm.
A great way to start the new year is to look back over the previous one and make a list of everything you accomplished. Folks have a habit to look at everything that did not work out and just focus on the negative. It helps to put things into perspective by reflecting over the past 12 months to realize all the great things you did achieve.
Next, make a list of everything you want to get done over next 12 months.
However, instead of calling them “goals,” label them as intentions.
An intention is something that is in the process of being done, whereas a “goal” is something you are striving for, but is not necessarily in process. It is more of a wish. An intention is more deliberate and not as nebulous as a goal. Also, when listing your intentions, be as specific as possible.
Once you have a list of all your intentions, break that list down into the following broad categories:
Health/Fitness
Job/Business
Relationships (this can include relationships pertaining to family, partner, or friends)
Finances/Money
Travel and/or other activities for enjoyment
Look over your categories and choose one or two that you want to work on this year.
Once you’ve decided, take a look at everything you want to improve within those categories, and choose one action item from each that you feel will make the biggest impact to reaching all your intentions in that category. For example, let’s say you want to work on your finances this year.
Maybe you wrote something like:
“I want a job that pays me $20,000 more per year.”
“I want to have $5000 saved in the bank by December.”
“I want to buy a new car.”
Which ONE, when achieved, would naturally make it easier to acquire the others?
In this case, it would be the intention of finding a job that pays $20,000 more per year. If you’re making more money, then there would be more cash to put toward a savings account, and there would also be more to put toward purchasing a new car.
As you can see by just focusing on the ONE area of making more money for the year, the other two desires “automatically” can be accomplished, too.
Stay tuned for Part 2 of “Uplevel Your Life in 2023” which will dig deeper into how to achieve your New Year’s intentions.
