Joanna Angel, an iconic mogul in adult entertainment, recently announced the release of her new film, Shadowbanned. The film is described as an “open letter to Instagram,” addressing wider sex worker discrimination levied by that social media platform specifically — and thus by the mainstream in general.
Though this writer feels giving even one single fuck about mainstream social media is a recipe for nothing but wasted time, frustration and general bad feels, I 100% understand the conflict.
Being present on mainstream social media is often presented as and felt to be an absolute necessity. How else will new people find you, especially those who may feel “nervous” et al about adult entertainment? At the same time, the inconsistently enforced double standards between sex workers and those who are *merely* leveraging sexualized imagery for… well, for who the fuck knows for what honestly… is every kind of bad.
I’d be lying if I didn’t say that I thought Angel’s efforts with Shadowbanned, though admirable and lovely, were kinda moot. At the same time, her awareness of the issue and her willingness to spend her time, money and energy addressing topic that impacts everyone in the industry to some degree is noteworthy.
Here is some press about the film. If you have the bandwidth, take a moment to check out Shadowbanned and support Angel’s efforts however you see fit!

Montreal, QC – Burning Angel recently announced the release of a surreal new feature, Shadowbanned. The film is described as an “acerbic commentary” from writer/director Joanna Angel on social media’s restrictive measures on certain types of sexual content shared by certain members of society.
Jessie Lee takes center stage as an adult film star who is trapped inside another dimension with no voice to be heard, while popular influencers Angel, Rocky Emerson and Maddy May get away with freely posting anything and everything on their high-profile social accounts.
Angel, who calls the film “an open letter to Instagram… with sex in it,” came up with the story’s concept out of frustration with social networks using covert and underhanded methods of shadowbanning – blocking content from public online viewing without a user’s knowledge – to deliberately censor sex workers on their platforms.
In true Burning Angel fashion, Angel’s ambitious horror-fantasy-comedy, which also stars Dante Colle and Codey Steele, fuses the alt porn icon’s “comedic sarcasm” with a “campy, spooky” setting – just in time for Halloween!
Angel enthused, “The entire cast and crew worked very hard on this labor of love. I’m so incredibly proud of this for so many reasons, and I can’t wait for the world to see it!”
Burning Angel is accessible to all members of Gamma Films studios’ sites, as well as on the Adult Time platform at AdultTime.com.
