Porn is an art form. Let me explain.
Adult film is one of the many film genres out there, but it sure stands out between all the others. While we see other genres as mainly focused on delivering a specific story, adult films are centred around sexual activity. This, however, does not mean that porn has to lack a storyline and other important aspects. While the main goal of porn is to help the viewer to achieve sexual gratification, we can still get creative with the way we tell these sexy stories.
“There are no original ideas, and everything has been already done before.” This is a phrase that I have heard from many adult creators too many times. But the truth is, you don’t have to invent a new niche or do something that has never been done.
Trying to come up with something that has never been done before is the easiest way to hit the creative block. Let me put it this way: It’s not what you show, it’s how you show it. And it’s not what you say, it’s how you say it. Your perspective and your personal touch are the things that make your porn special.
In this article, I’m going to share my perspective on creative expression in porn as well as the thoughts of four other adult content creators about this topic.
Lead with your heart, Be open to experimentation
I have been in the adult industry on and off for about four years now. I started out as a cam model but later on shifted my focus to making my own porn, which I am doing until this day. My niches changed over time, but for years I have been making peeing videos, which is probably my main niche at the moment.
You might wonder, how many times can someone film themselves peeing without loosing the interest of their viewers? Over time I have found a couple of ways to mix things up while sticking to a particular niche. Here’s a list of ways you too can be open to experimenting within your niche:
— The most well-known thing that can help you to make more interesting content is a storyline. For example, one I am locked out of my bathroom and wet myself because I can’t hold it in anymore.
— There’s clothing and props. I can switch up my outfits and panties or even film nude.
— Think about angles. Is this a hidden camera type of video? Am I confessing to the viewer or is the viewer involved in the scene, like a POV type of video? The choice is mine!
— Change up locations. If you don’t have the access to a variety of locations, you can take the advantage of a green screen.
— Finally, video editing effects. Do I want my porn to look like an old movie? Like a music video? The possibilities are endless.
Of course, I did not start out by making the type of porn I wanted to make right off the bat. Hell, for a while I had no clue what I wanted to make, how did I want it to look and what message I wanted to send to my viewers. It took a lot of experimentation until I crystalized my vision and realised that I want to focus on female pleasure and sensuality.
Insights from Creators
Layna Landry: “My work is a celebration of the beauty of the human form in its most ecstatic and vulnerable state.”
Layna Landry has been making adult content on and off for six years. They started out by performing in mainstream porn but since have transitioned into predominantly producing their own content. Landry loves to focus on creating public and nature porn, POV real couple content and squirting videos.
“My creativity comes from a desire to bring into material existence stories and visuals through my specific lens and unique perspective on sexuality, relationships, and humanity and the intricate complexities of all three — the nuances that often get thrown to the wayside, particularly by mainstream production companies, in the interest of churning out algorithmically friendly content,” Landry told YNOT Cam.
“My work is a celebration of the beauty of the human form in its most ecstatic and vulnerable state,” Landry shared. “After all, the nature of art is to make people feel, and what arouses feeling with more immediacy than the most vulnerable and instinctual of intimate expression — sex?”

Emilia Song: Pairing dramatic story structure with the human sexual response cycle
Emilia Song has been an erotic entertainer for over seven years. Her main speciality is creating cosplay videos and playing a superhero or a supervillain in her porn.
“I studied theatre when I was younger and had my sights set on directing for the stage, so I’ve always been interested in playing around with different characters,” Song shared.
“Cosplay and roleplay, which are two of my specialties, give me the opportunity to do that on my own terms, especially as an independent model. I actually use a lot of the skills I picked up in college in my dramatic analysis, playwriting, and design classes,” she added.
Song has also found a way to pair the dramatic structure of the story in her porn with the human sexual response cycle.
“By using the timing of a typical dramatic structure in [sync] with the viewer’s predicted sexual journey, you can get the story across without distracting from or overwhelming the viewer’s sexual interest… We don’t want them skipping ahead,” Song explained. “[And] of course, there’s also the costumes and the makeup and the set pieces, which are always fun to play with.”

Erin Carroll: Inspired by a strong desire to share
Erin Carroll, also known as Caring Erin on Twitter, has been an adult entertainer for six years. She likes to make videos of herself doing creative things naked, such as rapping, singing, painting and so on. When she makes more explicit content, often with her husband as well, she likes to create content with “homemade sex tape” feel.
“My adult work is quite varied! I am not sure if it all qualifies as ‘porn.’ I have a lot of nude content in which I am singing, playing instruments, showing my paintings and other visual art…” Carroll shared with YNOT Cam.
“Every creative outlet I have… I do it naked and boom, it’s content,” Carroll continued. “I’m making a latch hook pillow right now. I bet I could make a video of me naked just working on my little latch hook pillow, and there would be people who would enjoy it!”
A lot of Carroll’s creativity is also expressed by paying attention to more technical details during the filming and editing process.
“I am sure to have a lot of varying angles and make sure that the composition of the shot is pleasing and efficient. And I usually color correct to make everything more saturated, because that’s how I see it in my head. I have always been fascinated with cinematography, so it’s nice that I am able to use some of what I’ve learned even just for a five-minute video of me masturbating on my bedroom floor,” Carroll shared.
When asked what inspires Carroll to make the content that she does, her answer is simple: “I am mostly inspired by a strong desire to share. I have always been this way. I have always wanted to share my every thought and everything I do. I get very excited and very passionate, and I feel as if I will bubble over if I don’t share it.”

Gem Stoned has been an adult content creator for almost four years, mainly focusing on making squirting and deepthroating videos.
“Porn is definitely a way for me to express myself creatively. It gives me an outlet to bring not only my clients fantasies to life but mine as well. It also gives me a way to express things I cannot put words to,” Stoned said.
“I think [creativity] makes it unique and helps to build connection with the viewer. They are who I am expressing myself to,” Stoned added.

Closing Thoughts
The creative journeys and techniques of adult content creators vary quite a lot, and there is no wrong way to get creative with making your own porn. Stay open-minded, be ready to experiment with different niches, props, angles, editing styles and so on.
