Cam_Girlfriend, a 10-part comedy YouTube series, recently aired its final episode. Throughout the series, episode plots were fun, real life seeming, cam model-specific and sex-positive. The storylines never got deep or serious — and honestly, that’s fine.
I was able to effortlessly breeze through Cam_Girlfriend’s web series in a single morning while drinking coffee and working out. The show is watchable and sweet. Its leads are charming. Not surprising, I suppose, considering the series star, Lily LaBeau, is a popular adult performer and cam model on Chaturbate.
“LaBeau … portrays Chloe, who is struggling to juggle her relationships with Mike and her dedicated camming fans. Dave Keystone, the 2018 Canadian Screen Award winner for Best Host of a Web Program, portrays Mike, who “quickly discovers the intricacies of sharing living space with not only Chloe but also her online followers.”
So, should you spend a morning watching Cam_Girlfriend? Here are my thoughts.
As previously noted, the series star (LaBeau) is an adult performer and actor. LaBeau also is credited as a story consultant and was hired as such to ensure each episode remained authentic. In fact, Cam_Girlfriend’s stories were related to the actress’s real-life experiences as a cam performer.
In addition to having authenticity, the series is fun and light. This is somewhat due to the episodes being loosely scripted, allowing the performers to riff off each other in real-time, creating quick dialogue that popped.
The series also portrayed LaBeau’s fans as decent, albeit sometimes impishly mischievous, people. Sure, their usernames were chuckle-worthy (there’s even an episode that riffs on the all-too-common semi-pornographic nicknames some fans give their selves), but their “typed” dialogue is funny and adds to the show’s general carefree feel.
Lastly, it was nice to see a cis, seemingly heterosexual man support his cam girlfriend. Yes, the couple is absolutely flawed, and at times they both do cringe-worthy things to each other, but that’s life.
This last point leads me to the series one flaw, which isn’t necessarily a flaw at all. Cam_Girlfriend is really light, but that’s the point. If you’re looking for complicated characters who have stirring conversations about cam modeling and models’ interpersonal relationships, this is not the show for you. Cam_Girlfriend is absolutely something to check-in with if you’re looking to decompress and have a few laughs while trying to forget that part of the United States is LITERALLY on fire.
I’ll be interested to see if Cam_Girlfriend comes back for a second season and if the creators do decide to take the story down a more serious road or continue to keep the mood light. No matter their decision, though, if they continue with this cast and crew and remain true to a real-life cam model’s lived stories, I’m sure whatever’s to come will be enjoyable and entertaining.
