The world of camming has evolved, and some of the more popular cam sites are opening up mobile broadcasting capabilities. What does that mean for you? It means that you can take your show “on the road” and give your fans access from anywhere you are able to stream.
Here are some tips when taking your show on the road — to your cell phone.
Public broadcasting
Be sure you are not in a public setting that will expose yourself to others, including but not limited to minors, and/or show other people in your stream.
The possibility of camming in some exotic places may give you an urge to logon but keep the potential consequences of taking such risks and exposing yourself in public or broadcasting unauthorized and unknowing individuals in mind. You could risk losing your cam account all together. Play it safe and be mindful of those around you.
Make sure your phone can handle it
Now that you have found the perfect place to broadcast, your next step is to make sure you can connect to a stable wifi signal and/or you have a data plan that will support your broadcast stream.
If you question whether or not your plan will support live broadcasting data usage, call your carrier and advise them you are interested in doing live streaming from your phone. Ask how that will impact your data plan. You don’t have to disclose the type of broadcast you’re planning (YouTube and Instagram having live features). You’re simply simply ensuring your plan will support your need to connect wherever you may be.
Note: If you are traveling outside your home country, I do not recommend using your data plan as the rates are extremely high.
Charge it up!
This might sound like a no brainer, but make sure your phone is fully charged. You can even plug in your phone while camming. If you are moving around, plus your phone into a portable battery pack or power bar. There are endless, inexpensive options, and this will save you as the broadcast stream will drain your battery very quickly.
I recommend a charging bank with multiple plugs so you can use a ring light or other accessories.
Use a tripod or adjustable stand
Propping your phone against random items can be not only insecure for your broadcast and a pain in the ass but dangerous for your phone! Make sure you have some sort of way to securely position your device.
Lighting
Back to the ring light! Be it a battery operated selfie light or a photo ring light, make sure you have some sort of lighting for your broadcast. Nothing is worse than having the perfect location for a stream… but your viewers can’t see you. There are plenty of inexpensive portable lighting options that plug in with a USB or are battery operated for travel convenience.
Close out your other apps
Make sure all of your apps are closed and you’re only running the stream app or browser. Having your broadcast as the only app pulling from your battery and data is highly important. Not only will it help your device run smoother and faster and your battery last longer, but it will help save on your data usage.
Make sure all of the pages of the browser(s) are closed out, as well. Google how to close out various pages of your browsers — Safari, Mozilla, Chrome, etc — as every time you open a page it usually keeps it active until you manually close them out.
You want to ensure your phone is only running the necessary app or browser for your streaming.
Put it on silent!
Turn off your ringer and notifications, and put your phone on “Do Not Disturb.” Notifications, texts and phone calls will disconnect you from your stream. If the device you are using is your main source of texts, phone calls and app notifications, turn them off.
Prep kit for outdoor streaming
I have a bag for outdoor photo shoots that I also use for the spontaneous mobile broadcast. In my bag, I have baby wipes, a small blanket to sit on, a towel, baby oil, sewing kit, bottled water and a few other random items just in case I may need them in remote areas where I am not able to easily get to my car.
Mobile broadcasting can be fun and daring, and you can really spice up your shows with random backgrounds. Enjoy, be smart and be safe!
