The great thing about camming is you can set your own schedule.
However sometimes you just can’t help overdoing it. Whether you have a vacation coming up where you know you’ll miss a lot of work, you’ve been sick and need to catch up, or you’re just a glutton for punishment – you may have scheduled back-to-back shows with little downtime to eat.
In these cases, it’s smart to have some healthy snacks within reach so you don’t end up hangry.
Recently I wrote about these options that can get you through a rough camming day – but I didn’t cover nuts because I felt their awesomeness deserved a separate article. In fact, they’re so awesome, they even have their own holiday – National Nut Day – which just came and went on October 22.
Why are nuts so fantastic?
Not only are they delicious, easy to pack and store, great for punching up other foods, are high in protein, and chock-full of good fat, but they have major health benefits.
As reported on by the Mayo Clinic, regularly reaching for these little wonders can “improve artery health, reduce inflammation related to heart disease, decrease the risk of blood clots, which can lead to heart attacks and strokes, lower the risk of high blood pressure, lower the risk of early death due to heart disease, [and] lower unhealthy cholesterol levels, specifically triglycerides and low-density lipoprotein, also called LDL or “bad” cholesterol.”
Harvard further reported: “In one large study examining nuts and health, researchers analyzed data from over 210,000 health professionals followed up to 32 years. They found that, compared with those who never or almost never ate nuts, people who ate one ounce of nuts five or more times per week had a 14% lower risk of cardiovascular disease and a 20% lower risk of coronary heart disease during the study period.”
Even with all these known health benefits, some people avoid nuts because they’re high in calories. Yet, you may be surprised to learn that research says they actually help regulate and PREVENT weight gain.
According to Healthline: “One study looked at the diets of 8,865 men and women over 28 months. It found that those who ate two or more portions of nuts a week had a 31% lower risk of weight gain, compared to those who never or rarely ate them (10Trusted Source).”
However, that doesn’t mean you should be eating 2 cups a day, everything in moderation! Allow yourself a nice-sized handful and you’ll be golden. So go ahead and stock up on almonds, cashews, Brazil nuts – whatever strikes your fancy to keep yourself going strong on those days you’ve overscheduled yourself.
