In camming, it is generally accepted amongst models that there are periods during the year which are slower or where there is less money to be made. A lot of these differences are attributed to seasons, e.g., during summer, more people are outside doing stuff and spending less times indoors. But models need to remember that although the Northern Hemisphere is currently in the middle of summer, the Southern Hemisphere is in the grip of a very cold winter.
And the Southern Hemisphere is home to some of the biggest markets and audience of adult content.
Who is in the Southern Hemisphere?
Although the United States consumes a lion’s share of porn (according to PornHub’s 2022 Year in Review), there are several countries in the top 20 who are in the Southern Hemisphere. Basically, everything that is below the equator is the Southern Hemisphere and that includes Australia, Brazil, Argentina and Colombia, all of which are in the top 20 originating countries for global daily traffic to PornHub.
In these countries, the seasons are reversed (it is winter in the Southern Hemisphere while it is summer in the Northern Hemisphere) and there are also significant time differences. For example, I am in South Australia, which is +9:30UTC. In comparison, the East Coast of the US is -7:00UTC.
What does this mean in the real world?
It means that while it is the very early hours of the morning in LA, it is early evening of the same day in Australia. I joke that I am “from the future” when talking to people from the US, as I am between 13 ½ and 16 ½ hours ahead. Keeping this in mind is important if you know where your audience is from, because camming first thing in the morning when you are in the US will make you visible to those of us in the Southern Hemisphere who are winding down for the night.
Are Australians My Target Audience?
Although you may not have content on PornHub, the data they provide can give you an idea of who your audience could be and where they are located.
Combining this with your personal data from other sites (such as sales history and traffic statistics) can help you work out if you can harness Australian viewership. Although other platforms do not provide as detailed reports of their viewership as PornHub does, they usually give some information specific to you which you can combine with other general sources.
In 2022, the most popular searches in Australia were “lesbian” and “anal” ahead of “hentai.”
Other search terms that increased in rank were “Indian,” “creampie,” and “gangbang.” In Australia in 2022, the top 5 categories were Lesbian, Threesome, Asian, Outdoor and MILF. The PornHub report also gives data that compares Australia to the rest of the world, in terms of how popular the categories and search terms are.
This means you can work out if targeting your content towards Aussie audiences, as opposed to other places in the world, will bring you more traffic.
The report also breaks down the gender identification of its visitors and shows that female viewership is increasing across the world. In Australia, 32% of viewers are female, which is an increase of 3% from the previous year. The age of viewers can also be found in the report, and the breakdown of Australian viewers is similar to those in the Northern Hemisphere, with most of them coming in between 18 and 34 years old.
What is the Takeaway?
Australia continues to be a growing market for adult content, with demographics that are similar to the US.
Content featuring lesbian, threesome and anal continues to be popular in Australian search terms. Finally, I think that by keeping in mind the seasonal and time differences between the Northern and Southern Hemisphere, there are opportunities for models to harness Australian audiences.
