The best part about camming is it can be done right in your bedroom and doesn’t require a lot of space. But in order to make content that looks professional, attention to set decoration is a must. Creating a place to perform that is well thought out and looks inviting (you want people to feel welcomed and hang out with you) can really bring your shoots to a whole new level.
Making your space look great doesn’t, however, have to empty your pocketbook.
With a few cheap and quick decoration ideas you can reimagine your room without breaking the bank. Once you’ve achieved your desired look it will also make your more excited to cam – after all what fun is performing without an awesome stage?
First and foremost, you want to think about lighting which works hand and hand with set design as it completely changes the vibe of your room regardless of how it’s decorated. You’ll want to check out this article by guest writer Scott Trainor who had some great advice on inexpensive lighting as well as Morgan Go Wild’s recent column about setting up your cam space which also has top-notch suggestions. Also take a dive into my article about mood lighting.
Moving past that, you can then focus on making your room pop with the addition of rugs, pillows, hangings, and other types of artistic expression that fit your brand.
I recently came across these grey fake “sheepskin” rugs that are way cheaper than the real thing, come in a variety of sizes and more importantly are washable – when they get dirty you simply chuck them in the machine and tumble dry. They come out looking even nicer than when you bought them. If you’re wanting some pops of color you can go for one of these too – pink anyone? These wash up nice as well but need to be hang dried.
For cushions – World Market always has a ton of nice pillows that go on sale periodically – I personally like these cotton velvet ones which come in an astounding 21 colors – at the time of this writing they’re less than $10 bucks apiece – if they’ve gone up since then guaranteed you’ll find them on discount again (they’re a staple and they’ve carried them for years). You can pair those pillows with Kantha Quilts if you want a more hippy vibe or try some leather for the dominatrix in you. And don’t forget thrift stores which often have all kinds of blankets, pillows, and throws – many are new, nearly new, or gently used – for next to nothing.
Looking for a goth vibe? Target can’t be beat for black curtains, and while you’re at it you can pick up some black roses. For something more elf-like or magical these artificial hanging ivy plants can make you look like you’ve popped out of the forest to play. Or consider putting up a mural – want to show them the sexy librarian you are? How cool is this book backdrop that makes you look like you’ve cloistered yourself amongst the tomes?
Whatever you decide to do the important thing is to have a vision and concept for your room. Be specific and create a real space that makes you excited to cam in.
