Porn is often viewed as the common evil in modern society. It is dirty, scandalous, degrading and ruins people’s perspective on healthy sex lives. Or so they say. There are so many porn myths floating around that sometimes it is hard to figure out what’s true and what’s not. Here are some common porn myths that are long overdue to be busted.
1. Watching porn equals cheating on your partner.
Tell me one thing – is watching a romantic comedy the same as cheating on your partner? I didn’t think so! Sure, you’re probably not having a wank while watching a romantic comedy, but both porn and romantic movies are forms of entertainment and nothing more. Just like you’re unlikely to leave your partner for Ryan Gosling after watching The Notebook, you’re probably not going to leave them for your favorite porn star after watching a steamy video. However, it is important to point out that some people might feel insecure after discovering their partner watches porn because they are wondering if they are good enough in bed for their partner. While this can be a common enough issue, watching porn definitely does not constitute as cheating.
2. Porn is addictive.
Porn itself is not more addictive than, let’s say, video games. There is no clinical evidence that porn is addictive. However, it is a narrative that anti-porn crusaders love to push. All I’m going to say is that too much of a good thing can be bad for you, just like eating so many sweets that your teeth start to rot is bad. All good things can be enjoyed in moderate doses. But no, porn is not addictive.
3. Watching porn makes men more violent towards women.
This is yet more propaganda that anti-porn activists love to bring up. But correlation doesn’t always equal causation. According to Psychology Today, “several scientific research studies show that people watching porn do not have more misogynistic views towards women compared to those not watching porn.”
4. Cis men are the only ones who enjoy watching porn.
False. I have talked to plenty of women and gender non-conforming folks who also enjoy watching porn. The demand for porn in those groups of people definitely exists. However, the supply does not quite match the demand. Most porn does seem to be geared towards cis straight men, which is why we as creators need to make a change. If you’d like to learn on how to make your porn more inclusive, check out my article on that HERE.
5. All porn is only about male pleasure.
This myth is slightly connected to the one I just mentioned. Since a huge chunk of porn is made with a straight cis male audience in mind, there is a huge focus on male pleasure. However, there is also plenty of porn that loves to highlight the pleasure of other genders. And the best way to find this porn is by browsing amateur sections instead of focusing on professional shot pornography.
