The vagina is an interesting part of the human body. First, let’s clear up a few misconceptions about the vagina. Technically, the parts that are viewable from the “outside” are not really “the vagina.” Those parts are all components that make up the sexual muscle commonly referred to as the vagina, but what is visible on the outer part of the body is the vulva. The vulva includes the labia lips, the clitoris, the mon pubis, vestibula bulbs, urinary meatus, vulva vestibule, the hymen, vaginal opening, Skeins and Bartholin’s vestibular glands, sebaceous glands, urogenital triangle, and pubic hair.
The actual vagina is the canal passage that goes inside from your uterus down to the outside opening of the vulva. This passage or organ contains a multitude of bacteria, called micro-organisms, sometimes referred to as microbiomes or vaginal flora. These all work to keep the vagina healthy.
It is important to keep your vagina healthy to avoid bacterial or yeast infections.
One great and low-cost way to accomplish this goal is to stop wearing underwear. If not all the time, at least sometimes.
According to ob-gyn Lakeisha Richardson, MD out of Greenville, Mississippi, “There is no scientific evidence that women have to wear underwear.” She suggests this is even true when working out at the gym. Dr. Richardson explains that going without underwear can decrease your chances of getting bacterial or yeast infections. She offers a word of advice, however, if you will be working out commando style – choose moisture-wicking workout clothing.
Another gynecologist, Dr. Donnica Moore, out of New Jersey, stated, “It’s not good to always have the lady parts locked up. They need air like all other body parts.”
Wearing underwear all day long can cause the heat and sweat to build up, which can lead to the perfect breeding ground for bacteria and yeast and other unwanted infections. Another contributing factor to infections is the type of fabric being worn. Underwear made of lace and/or Lycra are non-breathable types of fabric. These can help create the perfect environment that can lead to contracting some type of nasty infection.
If you are uncomfortable with the idea of going underwear free during the day, then at the very least stop wearing underwear at night when sleeping. Take a bath before bedtime and gently clean all your lady parts and then let them “air out” while you slumber.
As a sex worker, your vagina and all its related parts truly are you “money maker,” so it is important to treat this part of your body with the extra care and attention it deserves.
