The past few weeks have shown a myriad of updates from Twitter who has been aggressively hoping to reach their target of 315 mDAU (monetizable daily active users) by the end of 2023. A few include improving upon the DM search to allow you to find messages by keywords, the ability to record a GIF via your iOS camera and the testing of a customizable status update.
Most relevant to the adult industry is Twitter’s reverse decision to prioritize its algorithmic feed — which isn’t necessarily great for content providers — and the launch of professional accounts for all which is!
The reversal of the algorithmic feed may hurt content providers.
On March 10, Twitter tried to convince users that they’d prefer an algorithm to the reverse-chronological feed by rolling out an update that gave the Home Feed priority. With the fix, you could only access the Latest Tweets if you pinned it to your timeline to get a dedicated tab. If you didn’t, out of sight, out of mind.
With the new focused Home Feed, users only saw content that Twitter’s algorithm thought they would like. By pushing people to concentrate on the most relevant tweets (according to the algorithm) Home Feed could help creators’ tweets skip the line to be seen — especially if you’re hash tagging correctly and homing in on an audience. Latest Tweets, on the other hand, shows every single Tweet in reverse-chronological order which could bury content. If you happen to be on Twitter 24/7 maybe that works for you, but if you’re not, the algorithmic update is most likely going to be better for your business.
Unfortunately, the Twitterverse balked at the update and demanded to have their legacy Latest Tweets back front and center. Twitter was forced to reverse the fix with a note that they’d be trying some other options — they haven’t given up on it yet.
The launch of professional accounts is a win for creators.
The second update is Twitter’s decision to make Professional Accounts available to all. In the past you had to apply to get business profile giving you a bevy of perks you don’t get with a personal one. These include branding tools to make your page stand out and the ability to promote content through ads. It also gives you first crack at Twitter’s pilot e-commerce program which was designed to promote products directly from a business profile. Now you’re no longer forced to wait for approval to score a Professional Account. This is good news for adult creators who may have previously run into problems with Twitter approving their requests.
As a caveat you could still be denied. You’ve got to be a professional. If you use Twitter for business, you’re automatically considered one so that’s an easy pass. Where it gets dicey is Twitter won’t give a thumbs up to an account with repeated violations of guidelines. So, if you’ve been shadowbanned for no reason numerous times, it could make it difficult. Lastly, the account must be authentic, and fan and parody accounts are not eligible. If you don’t already have a Professional Account, go check out the app and see if you can set one up.
