Twitter has been a busy little bee, recently launching several updates to optimize the platform and help keep it viable.
Extremely relevant to the adult industry is Twitter’s new monetization tool called Creator Dashboard. Currently in the works, the feature is being tested on creators on iOS. It’s an interesting addition to the Twitter Spaces Spark Program that they launched back in October. The Sparks Program offered support (monetary and promotional) to content providers to launch weekly conversations on topics — much like Clubhouse currently does.
Competitive New Tools & Features
The new Creator Dashboard feature was developed to easily track earnings and Super Follow subscriptions.
Located under the “Monetization” tab, you can view your payout threshold, estimated income from Super Follows and a list showing who has renewed their subscription. The page, called the Earnings Dashboard, will also include a breakdown of Ticketed Spaces, number of tickets sold, a list of the buyers and likely earnings.
If you’re unfamiliar with Super Follows and Ticketed Spaces, Super Follows is a way to generate cash by offering paywalled content to subscribers, while Ticketed Spaces gives you the power to name a ticket price for your Spaces broadcasts. There’s one caveat: You must have 10,000 followers and be active in Tickets Spaces and Super Follows to have access to the update.
The second feature Twitter launched in March is improved Tor Onion service. This is especially important to the adult industry because it deals with privacy. Fans that want to conceal their identity while surfing the platform and your page will benefit from marked Twitter enhancements to the Tor browser.
Tor technology encrypts web traffic and routes it through different servers to keep users anonymous. No cookies, third-party trackers or ads can see what the user is up to, and no one can monitor the sites they’re visiting. Though one could previously access Twitter through the Tor browser, they’ve developed a new version which is specific to the network and adds more protection.
As reported on by The Verge, the launch is exciting for Twitter because it’s been in the works since 2014. Alec Muffet, a software engineer who helped Twitter get the update off its feet, said:
Another benefit to the Tor Onion update is the ability to reach users even if the site is blocked.
The user simply pulls up the Tor browser to access Twitter. This comes at a time when censorship is at a high as governments across the world seek to regulate and control social media — or outright ban it. Germany, for example, blocked adult content after bowing to legal pressure. With the new Twitter Tor Onion service, Germans will still be able to view that censored content. Tor can be difficult to access in some countries, but for Russia and the EU, the service is available.
Lastly, Twitter had one more update that’s worth mentioning. Launched in February, users are now able to pin up to six direct message conversations at the top of their inbox. 9to5Mac reported that this is all part of revamping their whole message system. The company recently acquired messaging apps Sphere and Quill, which are expected to help to continue to improve the user experience with regards to messaging.
With so many back-to-back updates, it can be expected that Twitter will continue to find more ways to please content providers, fight censorship and enhance messaging capabilities as the year rolls out. If only they’d find more ways to make it easier on the adult industry with regards to shadow banning and other issues.
There’s always hope.
