Twitter CEO and co-founder Jack Dorsey has stepped down from his role with the social media platform. This news was confirmed by the organization on Monday November 29, 2021. Parag Agrawal will replace @jack as CEO.
A press release stated:
…Jack Dorsey has decided to step down as Chief Executive Officer. [T]he Board of Directors has unanimously appointed Parag Agrawal as CEO and a member of the Board, effective immediately. Dorsey will remain a member of the Board until his term expires at the 2022 meeting of stockholders… Agrawal has been with Twitter for more than a decade and has served as Chief Technology Officer since 2017.
The press release also stated that, “Bret Taylor was named the new Chairman of the Board, succeeding Patrick Pichette who will remain on the Board and continue to serve as chair of the Audit Committee…” — which, let’s get back to Jack.
The now-former Twitter CEO explained that, “I’ve decided to leave Twitter because I believe the company is ready to move on from its founders. My trust in Parag as Twitter’s CEO is deep. His work over the past 10 years has been transformational. I’m deeply grateful for his skill, heart, and soul. It’s his time to lead.”
So Jack quit. Who cares?
Should we be concerned about this? My take: Probably.
Twitter, in spite of its many, many, MANY extensive flaws, is (was?) in fact the only and last mainstream social media platform that is reasonably welcoming/”welcoming” and safe/”safe” for sex workers to leverage professionally. Regardless of what area of sex work one may be in, you could still use Twitter.
Now, I will be the first to point fingers in my own face about being pretty over mainstream social media. It sucks, and it sucks one’s everlasting soul away into a deep void of pain and frustration that can never really be undone. As a collective entity, mainstream social media is discriminatory, exploitative and downright shitty in terms of support and customer service. Also, its traffic sucks and does not convert. There is no reason to belabor these facts (as I see them).
However.
Twitter also was the last place out there that civilians could find sex workers of all sorts mixed in with the gen pop. And for curious-yet-tentative newcomers, people with privacy concerns and several other key archetypical friends, fans and customers, Twitter was a place to explore sex work options in a relatively social-consequence-free zone. Meaning, no one was going to freak out if Dude Bro So-and-So was on Twitter. What exactly Dude Bro was doing on Twitter was irrelevant. And for adult performers and content creators, well, Twitter let’s you link out to your paysite, etc. just in case Dude Bro was interested or you needed the authentication for some other reason.
So, should we be concerned that there has been a massive change to the guard over there at the ol’ Twitterverse? Like I said: Probably.
