We recently received some press material about Stripchat — “Stripchat Voted ‘Most Loved,’ “Best Instant Earnings’ in 2020 Cam Survey.”
Sounds pretty legit! Let’s take a look.
Email correspondence stated: “The site ReadySetCam surveyed over 600 models about income, work habits and cam happiness. Stripchat was voted ‘Most Loved’ cam site by models, and ranked among the [highest] in model income.”
The PR itself then read:
Stripchat Voted “Most Loved” By Models in 2020 Cam Survey
Stripchat was named the cam platform “Most Loved Cam Site” by models in a 2020 survey from cam education site ReadySetCam.com. The survey of nearly 700 cam models, conducted on the social media network Reddit, showed Stripchat provides some of the highest weekly revenue for models, and the “Best for Instant Earnings.”
“We love our models, so we were really pleased to see how much they love us back,” says Max Bennet, Vice President of Stripchat. “Reddit has some of the most active and engaged models in the industry, so we’re really proud of this. This only makes us want to work harder for them, because the team is insistent that we earn the designation again next year!”
ReadySetCam also applauded Stripchat for having “modern technology that’s easy to use, as well as good privacy controls for the model.” It also cited its connection to xHamsterLive, which uses the platform and helps give Stripchat one of the largest audiences in the industry.
“We know every model needs something different, so we’ve worked hard to make the platform as flexible as possible, and to be part of a wider adult ecosystem,” says Bennet. “We allow models to promote their premium and social media accounts and have been rapidly expanding our tech to make it more flexible — not only allowing them to choose how they want to earn, but creating innovative tools like enhanced mobile camming and easy-to-custom profiles that help them stand out in a crowded market. If the result is happier models making more money… well, the plan worked!”
First off, “over 600” or “nearly 700,” which is it? Well, if you go to ReadySetCam, they’ll tell you: 655.
ReadySetCam took some additional time out to explain exactly what they had done to gather their data.
We conducted a survey of 655 actively-working webcam models in July 2020 and asked questions like: How much do you earn? Which cam site do you use? How long have you been webcam modeling for? How many hours per week do you spend camming?
The results are fascinating and we hope will provide helpful info for new cam models, people who are just getting back into camming, or anyone who’s just curious about the latest data for the industry.
Special thanks to the community on the CamGirlProblems and SexWorkers subreddits for their contributions to the survey.
Of note, the 655 respondents here came from Reddit only, and by their voluntary choice (eg the participants approached ReadySetCam if they wanted to contribute). In research, this is what’s called a “convenience sample.” So, though this survey certainly has lots of awesome info, it’s important to note that, from a research standpoint, its conclusions are not necessarily representative of the whole cam experience (whatever that means), nor are they generalizable.
Here are some key findings:
The average model earns $1,043 per week and spends an average of 18 hours per week camming.
My question — Does this 18 hours refer *just* to time broadcasting? I am assuming so, which makes me wonder what the average hours per week would be if it were to include everything else that goes into the job. Guessing that number would be just a teensy bit higher. Ya know, just a smidge.
The more experience you have on cam, the more money you make.
ReadySetCam wrote, “The biggest driver of how much a cam model earns is their level of experience. Unsurprisingly, the more years of experience a model has, the more they tend to make.” This makes sense to me!
Chaturbate “pays the most” — but that’s not the same as being “loved the most.”
ReadySetCam wrote, “Based on our survey results, we found Chaturbate, Streamate and MyFreeCams to be the most popular choices for cam models, with Chaturbate accounting for nearly half of all respondents.”
They continued: “After collecting data about earnings, we asked models to comment on their level of satisfaction with their primary cam site. Models ranked their satisfaction on a scale of 1 to 5, with 5 being extremely satisfied. Surprisingly, our survey found Stripchat to be the most loved cam site, with models rating it 4.3 out of 5 stars on average.”
“Surprisingly”?
ReadySetCam then goes on to talk about hourly pay, wage expectations and some bonus fun facts. They also took some time out to discuss how and why it’s difficult to determine exactly what the averages are. “It’s difficult to determine the average income because it depends on the hours worked, time of day, platform, skills, appearance, target audience, etc,” they wrote — a nice disclaimer at the end of the data presentation.
I do wish they would have listed this disclaimer towards the top of the survey results report. Even better, taken it a step further to acknowledge that — while interesting and illustrative — these numbers are not representative of the overall and/or “average” cam experience in any way shape or form.
Regardless, it’s interesting to see some perspective on the space. Context, even in this form — as long as limitations (which are not bad things, they are *just things* that are part of the research process) are acknowledged — is a good thing.
