I was this many days old when I first saw the Fisting Emoji!
(Actually, I saw it last week, but go with my sense of gleeful delight here…)
On January 29 in the Year of Our Lord 2020, Emojipedia was pleased to debut the Fisting Emoji. Interestingly however, there was a series of egregious typos in their announcement tweets — namely, they referred to the Fisting Emoji as “Pinched Fingers [Emoji], with skin tone support.”
You jokesters, Emojipedia!

Except maybe they weren’t kidding?
A quick hop over to Emojipedia itself revealed a definition. Specifically:
Pinched Fingers
An emoji showing all fingers and thumb held together in a vertical orientation, sometimes referred to as the Italian hand gesture ma che vuoi (or “finger purse”).
Pinched Fingers was approved as part of Unicode 13.0 in 2020 and added to Emoji 13.0 in 2020.
Could it be that Emojipedia and Unicode and all the other powers that be controlling the emoji dictionary don’t… actually… understand… what this gesture means and/or how fisting is actually done?
Sadly, after my initial adrenaline spike over the Fisting Emoji discovery started to tone down, it dawned on me that that’s exactly what’s happened. The Unicode people don’t know this “Pinched Fingers” emoji is actually fisting because THEY DON’T KNOW WHAT FISTING ACTUALLY IS.
Then, the more I thought about it, the more I realized/became convinced that they already thought there maybe was a fisting emoji. This because — and go with me here for a second — think about what most vanilla, non-industry or (sadly) just sexually and/or socially unaware people may think fisting is. Or like, how it happens: with an actual balled up fist!
Truly, I wouldn’t be surprised if Unicode thought that one of the following hand gesture emoji was more indicative of fisting. Fist bump to the right or left — maybe? Straight on punch — maybe? Raised fist in the air — that has to be it!
Or, maybe they have no idea fisting even exists, hence the puzzle pieces. (just kidding)
The fact remains though that you do exist Fisting Emoji, and if I may be so bold as to speak for the entire adult community — we’re so glad you’re here!
Unicode 13.0 also included Disguised Face, Smiling Face with Tear (a total Kacey Musgraves “Happy & Sad” shout out, fuck yeah!), a ninja, people hugging, a black cat, a polar bear and a lovely green bell pepper, among many other cute things. Enjoy them, and fist away!
