In phone sex, we all want long calls — but what about when a call goes on for too long? Calls that are too long have long since been referred to as marathon calls, complete with marathon callers.
The thing with marathon callers is this: It isn’t usually just one call. They tend to call again and again. And again.
These clients can make even the most senior of phone heaux want to check out and are one of the causes of temporary burnout. Grab your tool kit though, as I am about to fill it up with some helpful tips to keep your voice lubricated and your mind clear!
Hydrate, Hydrate
In a previous article I wrote for YNOT Cam about banking on a raspy voice, I outline how to heal your voice. Many of these steps can also help prevent you from losing your voice during these calls, and hydration is a big deal.
Hydration is important. There are many apps that can be used to help remind you to drink water. Developing this as a habit also has other benefits to our health too. Yes, you will need to pee more, but basically every phone made these days has a mute button.
When your vocal cords are properly lubricated, they can take a bit more abuse. It keeps your voice clearer and more stable when speaking. Ever had a coughing fit while on a call though you weren’t sick? This can also be a sign that you need more water.
Remember: When you are feeling thirsty, that means you are already dehydrated. While logged in to take calls, make sure you keep a full water bottle near you to help stave off a problem before it has the chance to begin. Continue to hydrate no matter how long the call is.
Personality is Key
Talking about giving a blow job to the client for eight hours straight is brain rackingly awful. I believe Dante was so horrified by this particular torture that he left it out of the nine circles of hell.
Even the most creative mind could not stay on one topic — any topic! — for such a long period of time without some support, and eight-hour conversations are more common than you probably believe them to be. One tactic keep the conversation going is breaking it up into sub-conversations, and the best way to do that is by understanding what is attractive about your personality.
Sally Hogshead wrote an amazing book called Fascinate: How to Make Your Brand Impossible to Resist. She is a renowned personality guru who has pinpointed what makes people attracted to certain personalities. She also notes what will drive people away from you, all based on your personality type. Best of all, her online test is free.
Knowing what to do and what not to do can assist you in having a more positive experience throughout a lengthy conversation. It can also serve as a source of inspiration for tactics to deploy when things get stale.
Get Those Lips Moving (Theirs, Not Yours)
Some think the point of phone sex is for us to do all the talking. Most experienced phone sex operators will tell you, though, that it is far better to get your client talking about a topic they love.
People love to talk about what interests them, so much so that it is my personal theory that many pay for phone sex as an escape to finally talk about what they want. Most of my clients admit to not being “heard” much in their personal lives.
In a long phone call, this will benefit you in multiple ways. It allows your voice to rest, gets you practicing those listening skills and, of course, ticks that per-minute in a Northern trajectory.
You may be wondering though, Is this not sort of a manipulative or sketchy practice?
I promise: It is not predatory to encourage a caller to speak. If a client is not interested in talking, they have many subtle ways of letting you know. Most marathon callers actually do want this though, to the point of talking to you for that long. They value this connection.
Be Comfy, Be Mobile, Be Productive
Have a place where you can sit or lay down long term? Great! Sitting for too long is known to be unhealthy though, so try to also have the space to pace around. A balance between still and mobile is important.
Also, try multitasking. Have a list of chores on hand that you can do that do not make too much noise and do not require your very close or precise attention. For instance, longer calls are a perfect time for:
*Folding towels
*Spraying the shower down
*Swiffering the kitchen
*Watering plants
…basically, whatever household task you can imagine! Make money and get your task/productivity goals up for the day.
Calls that are longer also mean the customer is more receptive to you doing things you wouldn’t on a shorter call. I frequently eat something on the phone, and my caller has no problem. They do not mind if I walk to get the mail outside either.
While thinking of comfort, make sure you have on clothes that are breathable. I usually have my hair up too, especially during the summer months. And as I mentioned, the mute button does exist. I try not to overuse it, reserving it for emergencies, like when I have to take a bathroom break.
When to Break the Connection
Connection is a funny thing. It can be great, but it can also lead to problems.
If a customer believes that you are very close to them, it can lead them to believe there is something more there. I am very against leading a customer on. This isn’t even just about money. It’s about having basic respect for another human. If the conversation begins to veer towards meeting each other, dating or any sort of relationship, this is a good time to call it an evening.
Likewise, if you just feel that you can’t go any longer, do not continue the call. Falling asleep or becoming increasingly distracted can lead to a customer deciding not to call back. Try to leave on a high note. Make a last-ditch effort to make the party fun, and then exit the proverbial stage right.
Having a plan in place and knowing your limits can make this transition less awkward if it happens. Remember to honor your boundary.
So there you have it! Are you ready for that next extremely long conversation?
There is no reason to dread a marathon caller if you prepare yourself appropriately. All it takes is strategizing before you ever login. Do the things to protect your sanity, voice and safety, and you may find you actually grow to look forward to longer calls.
Knowing the positive aspects of your personality can help drive sales.
