Y’all! For those of you headed to Las Vegas this week for AVN’s Adult Entertainment Expo (AEE), please consider attending the following workshop. It’s about media readiness — as in, being prepped to navigate media interactions, requests and questions.
Here’s more information:
Free Speech Coalition (FSC) will host an afternoon media training session for adult workers on Friday, January 26, 2018 at 2:30PM.
The event will be held in Studio B, inside the Hard Rock Hotel’s Paradise Tower, during AEE. The free workshop will be led by FSC Communications Director Mike Stabile and will focus on how to navigate press interactions from Twitter to the red carpet.
“Over the past few years, media has become more interested in giving adult workers a voice,” said Stabile. “In many ways, this has been amazing. However, we’ve also seen privacy violations, out-of-context quotes, disparagement and incorrect facts. We created this workshop to help performers and others know their rights when dealing with media, and to give them tools to give them more control during the interview process.”
The workshop will cover the basics of a media interview, including how to evaluate a press opportunity, how to communicate off-the-record, how to correct information once it’s been used inaccurately and how to navigate hostile and/or sex negative questions. Stabile will work with performers and models to address common misconceptions, answer questions and talk about real-life examples, such as Hot Girls Wanted and the #metoo movement.
Seriously, this is a great opportunity.
Media interactions should be like on-set and on-cam interactions: safe, sane, interactive and consensual. Oftentimes though, rather than looking to explore what’s actually going on, they’re one-sided, unclear and — sadly — seeking to shore up pre-set angles. Becoming more media aware will help you contribute to conversations about your work and workplace and its cultural impact, while providing tools to minimize unintended consequences.
If you’re attending AEE, take a beat out of networking and being generally fabulous to consider this topic and get familiar with the issues.
