You’re a model. Do you really need to know about sex toys?
I don’t mean have a basic awareness of sex toys. You obviously need that. But is it helpful for models to bump their sex toy expertise up beyond the “basics” level?
According to Susan Colvin, founder and chief executive officer of CalExotics, “As industry professionals, our goal is to help people find more joy in their lives.” This often can be facilitated with intimate products and sex toys.
Consider going cam-to-cam with a woman who has never experienced a G-spot orgasm, the type that occurs when the internal hot spot is stimulated. A knowledgeable model could recommend a product that could help. Colvin suggested the Jack Rabbit Signature Silicone Rocking “G” Rabbit. But without product knowledge, it would be more difficult to make recommendations.
“The more educated we are on these products and the topics surrounding them, the better suited we will be to help others,” Colvin said.
I asked Lucy Vonne, Harriet Sugarcookie, and Nikki Night to weigh in regarding the whys of sex toy knowledge. Here’s what they had to say.
Lucy Vonne, a self-described “sex-toy unicorn” who handles sales for Evolved Novelties, sees all sorts of ways sex toys can find their way into cam.

YNOT Cam: Why would cam models and live entertainers in general benefit from sex toy product knowledge?
Lucy Vonne: Cam models have the ability to set up shops under their name and sell items. Having knowledge of what they are using can help sell the items to people watching. If they have relationships with their viewers, viewer may go to the models for advice.
If a model was looking to get better product knowledge in general, where would she go?
The internet is a world of information, of course. Adam & Eve has a great website with all sorts of resources. I would also say go into your local toy shop and talk with the staff there about stuff. They are some of the most knowledgeable people and can pass that along.

Nikki Night, head of performer training and development at Cam4, said sex toys can make your life a little easier as a model.
YNOT Cam: Why would cam models and live entertainers in general benefit from sex toy product knowledge?
Nikki Night: Knowing the latest tech can give you an edge against your competition, for sure. Viewers are always looking for a new way to connect with their favorite performers online, and using the latest tech can make you stand out as a more established or professional performer against the rest.
Adding new toys to your show can make life easier for you (the performer), too. New tech will entice viewers to engage with you to see how your new gadgets work, and it also becomes a fresh topic to chat about in your rooms. Viewers like educating performers on new technology, as well. Perhaps a sexy private show to get a full lesson from your fan on how your new toy works would be a good idea?

Lifestyle media mogul Harriet Sugarcookie noted that, though no gimmick can replace true interpersonal interaction, specifically selected sex toys can help in myriad ways.
YNOT Cam: Why would cam models and live entertainers in general benefit from sex toy product knowledge?
Harriet Sugarcookie: Knowing about sex toys will always help when it comes to camming. It’s an important part of your job. Of course, knowing what toys work best for you helps you give a better show to your fans. But knowing what toys might be good for them or their partners is a great way to give back. Plus, it can be a really fun show if you have a new toy and you try it out for the first time while on cam. It’s a lot of fun, which, in my opinion, makes the best cam shows.
No prop is a good substitute for genuinely caring about your fans and engaging them like real people; developing real friendships with them.
What toys do you think are “must knows” in terms of product knowledge?
A lot of models like to use the We-Vibe or Lovense stuff right now. It makes sense, since it reacts to sound, such as tipping noises. But there are loads of great toys out there. Some let a remote user control it, giving your fans that added interaction. My personal favorite toys are from the Iroha brand. They’re actually owned by Tenga, who makes toys for guys, but the Iroha line for women uses the same material which is super-soft. It’s nice knowing the guys can have something similar to what you’ve got but reversed for them.

Regardless your strategy, there’s no downside to knowing more stuff. Spend some time learning what’s out there, and you will be ready with a plausible answer the next time you get a novelty question.
