The cam world is full of vixens, cosplay cuties and girls-next-door. This past year, though, the cam universe got a bit more mystical. Some adventurous cam models began donning tails, pastel wigs and shells to transform into mermaids for their fans.
Macy Kennedy
Macy Kennedy always has had a soft spot in her heart for mermaids.
“The cosplay started in high school when I was cast as a voiceless, miming Ariel in a school play, Not Another High School Musical. I enjoyed the role so much,” Kennedy said.
After she began camming, Kennedy came across various silicone tails while browsing the web. She bought an affordable, lighter silicone tail and immediately fell in love with it.
“I knew I was essentially the first camgirl to try this cosplay full-on,” Kennedy said.
Although concerned about moving in the tail and unsure how she’d look on camera, she knew her love of mermaids could propel her toward success.
Luckily, it didn’t take long for Kennedy to find that success.
“I knew this was my niche when all my fans fell in love,” she explained. “[My] fans said [I] fit the image of a mythical mermaid down to a T. Mermaids are sexy in nature as it is, but to bring it to life for my viewers is something I enjoy, and so do they.”

This reality really rang true for Kennedy at the 2017 Adult Entertainment Expo (AEE), where she was able to showcase her work.
“I had crowds taking pictures of me, and they all thought I was amazing,” she said. “My whole upper body was painted and I was confined to my tail. It was the best look that I’ve ever pulled off at such a huge expo.”
When Kennedy puts on her tail, she feels like she takes on “that” character.
“You become that person,” she said. “In a lot of ways, cosplay lets a person become someone or something they always wanted to be. That’s exactly what it did for me.”
Kennedy said mermaid cosplay is quite different from other forms of cosplay, however, . For example: Other cosplay characters aren’t as difficult to “put on.”
“Being in a tail dry is very difficult,” she said. “[That fact] became extremely apparent when I hit the floor like a falling tree at AEE.”
Kennedy added swimming in the tail adds another dimension of difficulty.
“It’s [hard] to get used to at first because of the weight,” she said.
Although mermaid cosplay is physically difficult to pull off, mermaids are one of the more mysterious characters in the cam world. In fact, until recently, finding an effective and attractive outfit for mermaid cosplay was quite difficult. In the past, the only mermaid outfits on the market consisted of cheap skirts that looked like tails. Now, however, models can buy any type of tail at a variety of price points.
But becoming a real-life mermaid isn’t all sunshine and glitter. For example, Kennedy said she must stage her cam in certain ways to be seen at the right angles during her show. “I don’t choreograph my shows because I like the organic feel, but I take time managing how I look, right down to my hair having the perfect mermaid waves and covering my nipples. It takes me about three hours to get ready for a mermaid show.”
Becoming her character can be quite expensive, too. For AEE, Kennedy spent almost $1,000 to get painted and mermaid-ready.
Although the gig is hard work, Kennedy said she wouldn’t have it any other way. She’s merely thrilled that she can make a childhood dream come true and make a living doing what she loves.

Lexi Rose
Lexi Rose got into mermaid cosplay for a similar reason: She grew up loving the mythical creatures.
“I guess some things just stick with you as you grow up, and you figure out a way to make the naughty version of what you like,” Rose said.
She said she thinks mermaid cosplay is uniquely appealing because it’s easy for models to immerse themselves in the character.
“[When you swim in a tail, you] literally become a mermaid, unlike if you were a character that flew or threw fireballs or something,” Rose said. “The tail becomes a part of you and is so lifelike, plus I happen to have a gigantic ‘mermaid tank’ to shoot in.”
Although Rose is still paying off the two tails she owns, she’s said she’s happy she made the cosplay mermaid plunge.
“It’s a labor of love,” she said. “I live for it.”
During her shows, she does a variety of things. Sometimes she improvises a show, just swims or does “mermaid masturbation.”
“It can be tough to find a partner in general due to stage freight and privacy concerns, let alone someone who can swim and work a GoPro underwater while fucking or getting a BJ,” she said, laughing.

Industry insiders on mermaid cosplay
Luckily, for mer-models, mermaid cam shows are becoming more popular.
According to Chaturbate Chief Operating Officer Shirley Lara, costume shows of all kinds have become quite the rage on her company’s platform.
“It’s a great way for broadcasters to make their chat room stand out on the homepage, and it earns them many devoted fans in chat,” she said.
Lara explained Chaturbate classifies and regulates mermaid and other fantasy animal cosplay shows the same way it does any other copyright- or trademark-protected content.
“We recommend broadcasters not label themselves as characters that have been used in movies or other recorded material,” she said. “For example, a broadcaster should avoid using the screen name ‘Ariel: The Little Mermaid’ and choose a name that doesn’t potentially infringe on Disney branding.”
Lara also said costumes of all types are allowed on Chaturbate, as long as they do not violate the site’s terms concerning broadcasters appearing to be at least 18 years of age.
“We also prohibit our broadcasters from using sex toys that are crafted to replicate sex organs of animals,” she said.
Thankfully, Chaturbate doesn’t consider fantasy role-playing shows taboo.
“Many people find any type of fantasy role-play disturbing, because it is seen as ‘childish’ and not related to mainstream adult entertainment,” Lara said. “However, the beauty of these types of shows is precisely because they are inherently different from everyday porn. It brings an element of excitement and uniqueness to the experience, as if it were a brand-new toy.”
