Size matters. And don’t act like you don’t care about battery life.
It seems like the iPhone 7 just came out (or is that just me?), but rumors are already spreading about the next iPhone expected to hit the market. It won’t officially be announced until September, but some sources are claiming they already know what’s up. As reported by Tech Crunch, “Rumor has it that Apple is going to announce three new devices — two new versions of the iPhone 7 and the iPhone 7 Plus, and a new high-end device that could cost more than $1,000.” There are also suggestions about something called “iPhone Pro.”
The most anticipated projected feature for the next iPhone model is is rumored to be a larger display, but on a phone the same size as the iPhone 7. How is this possible? As Tech Crunch noted, “In order to do this, Apple is going to eliminate the bezel around the screen so the surface of the device is just a giant screen.”
Apple reportedly will keep some space at the bottom for virtual buttons — a virtual home button and also buttons that are relevant to whatever app you’re currently using. Apple also recently patented a way to embed a fingerprint sensor into a screen, which accounts for where Touch ID is headed. This display will improve overall resolution and viewability of movies and other video, improving pixel quality as well. The zoom feature might also be improved, which is something worth noting, too.
As anyone who has ever been an early adopter of larger phones will tell you, bigger screens usually lead to worse battery life. Ugh. That right there defeats the purpose of the larger screen, IMO. According to Tech Crunch, though, Apple has found a way to pack more battery into the same dimensions. They might even be incorporating a stacked PCB mainboard, piling up all those transistors and power packs and things on top of one another.
What does this mean for you? Well, the more smartphones improve the more it seems like laptops and personal computers no longer will be the preferred method of viewing video content. If the rumors about this iPhone are true, it’ll be worth looking into how you can better integrate working with smartphones, whether filming or streaming.
Aside: I totally had to look up the word bezel. It’s the rim surrounding your phone’s screen that holds it in place. There are bezels on other things too, like watches and clocks and headlights.
